Publication Guidelines

INTERNATIONAL EXCAVATION, RESEARCH, AND ARCHEOMETRY SYMPOSIUM PROCEEDINGS PUBLICATION GUIDELINES

The proceedings of the Excavation Results Meeting, Research Results Meeting, and Archaeometry Results Meeting, which include papers presented at the annual International Excavation, Research, and Archaeometry Symposium, are prepared for publication under the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. These proceedings are made openly accessible to all researchers and interested parties via the Ministry's website. It is expected that all papers presented at the symposium be submitted for publication.

The copyright of the papers presented at the International Excavation, Research, and Archaeometry Symposium is considered transferred to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums. The papers will be reviewed only for compliance with the publication guidelines and writing rules by the Ministry’s editors. Authors are required to prepare the papers in accordance with copyright and ethical principles. The opinions expressed in the papers or any responsibilities arising from copyright violations belong to the authors.

Writing Language
The papers presented at the International Excavation, Research, and Archaeometry Symposium and submitted for publication to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums can be written in Turkish, English, German, or French. Authors should submit their papers in one of these languages.

Writing Rules
Papers submitted for publication to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums from the Excavation Results Meeting, Research Results Meeting, and Archaeometry Results Meeting should be prepared according to the following guidelines:

1.Title of the Paper: The title should be relevant to the content and cover the subject. It should be written in bold, 14-point font, and not exceed 12 words.

2.Author(s) and Their Address(es): The name(s) and surname(s) of the author(s) should be given with a footnote(*) added to the end of the first autor's surname, which will be located immediately below the right of the title; title, institution, contact, email address and ORCID number should be specified as follows.

For example: Prof. Dr. Derya ŞAHİN; Uludağ University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Archaeology, 16059 Görükle-Bursa/TÜRKİYE, E-mail: dsahin@uludag.edu.tr, ORCID: 0000-0003-0021-4271.

3.Main Text

  • The text of the paper should be prepared in Word format, 10-point font, single-spaced, in Times New Roman, with a total of no less than 1,500 words and no more than 4,000 words, including images, drawings, tables, maps, graphs, captions, and footnotes.
    The text should not include an abstract.
  •  Bold characters should not be used in the text. Italics should be used for foreign and technical terms. Direct quotations from other sources should be enclosed in quotation marks.
  • When preparing the text, the spelling rules of the Turkish Language Association should be followed. The dictionary application on the Turkish Language Association's website (https://sozluk.gov.tr/) should be used as a reference.
  •  Except for widely used abbreviations such as BC, AD, and standard measurement units like km, kg, m, cm, m², and m³, no other abbreviations should be used. In cases where abbreviations are necessary, the full form should be given on the first use, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, and subsequent uses should follow the abbreviation. For example: Early Bronze Age (EBA) layer, EBA wall.
  • Regions, periods, eras, ages, and institutions should be capitalized: Eastern Anatolia, Near East, Europe, Mediterranean Region, Tigris River, Interregnum Period, Late Bronze Age, Ottoman Period, Middle Ages, Turkish Historical Society, etc.

4.Section Headings:Main headings in the text should be in uppercase and italic, while subheadings should be in lowercase and italic, all in 12-point font. Main, intermediate, and subheadings may be used for organized information transfer. Proper numbering of main and subheadings should be followed.

5.Citations and References:

  • Direct quotations from other texts should be enclosed in quotation marks. If a quotation is less than five lines, it should be written within the text. If the quotation exceeds five lines, it should be written as a block, indented 1.5 cm from both the left and right sides.
  • In-text citations should be written in parentheses as follows (Akurgal, 1995, p. 44). For two-author publications, the format (Erdem and Yenice, 2008) should be followed. For publications with more than two authors, only the first author's surname should be used, followed by "et al." (e.g., Tunç et al., 2001, p. 45, fig. 3b).
  • Footnotes should be used only for explanations and must be numbered automatically.
    If the author’s name is mentioned in the text, only the publication year should be included. For example: According to Eyice (1985, p. 21)…”
  • For sources without a publication date, "n.d." (no date) should be added after the author's name. For example: Yılmaz, n.d., p. 13.
  • For anonymous works, the title of the work should be used. For example: MTA Report, 1979, p. 33.
  • When citing multiple sources, they should be listed in chronological order, from oldest to newest (Akurgal, 1966; Özgüç, 1969; Erkanal, 1983).
  • In the case of citing a work, the page number and, if necessary, the figure number used should be clearly indicated (e.g., Cook, 1966, p. 192, fig. 4).
  • All cited sources should be listed at the end of the text under the heading “References.” Publications not cited in the text should not appear in the reference list, and all cited publications should be listed in full.
  • For web sources, in-text citations should be written as “Web: 1”, “Web: 2”, “Web: 3”, etc., and the web page link along with the access date should be included in the reference list.

6.Tables, Maps, Drawings, Graphs, Figures, and Photos:

  • The number of visual elements accepted in the papers is limited to 15. All images, figures, tables, maps, and other visuals should be placed appropriately in the text and sent in separate files in JPEG format with a print-resolution of at least 300 dpi for photos and 600 dpi for figures, maps, plans, and similar drawings. Each visual should be numbered and referred to in the order in which it appears in the text.
  • Maps, drawings, photos, and graphics should be appropriately labelled and grouped under appendices, with the following order: maps, images, drawings, and graphs.
    Figures, maps, drawings, and photos should have captions below the visuals, written in sentence form and cantered.
  • If multiple visuals are presented together, they should be labelled as Figure, Image, etc., followed by a number and letter for each visual.

7.References:
The sources used in the text should be listed alphabetically by the surname of the author, following the examples below. If a single author has multiple publications, they should be arranged in order of publication date, with letters (2001a, 2001b, etc.) used for publications from the same year.

Submission of Paper Texts
Papers prepared in accordance with the principles outlined above, along with any accompanying visuals, must be submitted via WeTransfer to yayinlar@ktb.gov.tr by August 15th. Papers and visuals not submitted via WeTransfer will be automatically deleted by the system.

Evaluation of Paper Texts
Paper texts and their attachments must be submitted to our Directorate-General within the specified time frame. The texts will be reviewed by the relevant editors for compliance with publication principles and writing rules. If necessary, the editor may make corrections to the text or request the author to resolve any deficiencies. Papers that do not meet the required standards or that have not been corrected by the author by the final submission date will not be included in the publication.

Ethical Principles
The papers submitted for publication by the Directorate-General of Cultural Heritage and Museums must be prepared in accordance with the ethical principles outlined below:

Co-authorship: The authors of the papers should be limited to those who have contributed to the work. Names of individuals who did not contribute should not be included in the paper. The order of authors will be published in the order indicated in the manuscript submitted to the journal's editorial office.

Acknowledgements: Authors are required to acknowledge individuals, organizations, and financial sources that supported their work in the acknowledgments section. The acknowledgments section should be placed at the end of the text, before the references section.

Originality: The submitted paper must be the work of the author(s) presenting it. If the work includes references to other researchers' studies, the citations should be properly referenced and included in the bibliography. Authors are responsible for any legal consequences arising from copyright issues related to the submitted visuals and texts.

Presentation of Published Work: The works submitted by the authors should not have been previously published.
